all quiet on the home(made) front

I juiced my own bloody mary for the first time recently. Definitely would rate it a MEDIUM due to the consistency being a bit thicker than I normally enjoy. It sort of reminded me of the tomato soup bloodies Nimo and I created in The Hamptons summer 2k11. I only had grape tomatoes. I don't know what kind of tomatoes ARE THE BEST.

july sojourns




Rachel and Sam visited Annapolis and we brunched. The Rams Head Tavern has been sellin beerz since 1703 and opened an endless bloody mary bar more recently. Sam spilled hot sauce. Rachel felt too full. I added too many toasted sesame seeds. IT WAS GREAT.

I went to a delicious cocktail happy hour in a group of 4 and was the only one not to order a Bloody Mary. I love Bloodies, but it's a morning to late afternoon beverage in my opinion. Would YOU order a Bloody Mary at 6:30 (p.m.) ? They also all ordered a Pisco Sour as a second drink, leading me to believe I know nothing, because I don't know what this is. Herd Mentality.

Knee High by the Fourth of July

HÃ¥llo from Chicago! I'm writing from my new apartment in Logan Square. At the moment, I'm lounging in front of the air conditioner. Today is hot. Luckily, the Fourth of July was a beautiful, breezy day with temperatures hovering around the mid 70s. This was the first Fourth of July I have ever spent away from the cabin.  Kate and I started the day down at Navy Pier. We rode the Ferris Wheel. I only wanted to eat Fourth of July foods, so we had ice cream + hot dogs for dinner. The Chicago Dog, all prettied up with garnishes, is truly the Bloody Mary of hot dogs.

Of course, we had real Bloodies too - my first in Chicago! The bar was Lizzie McNeill's, a medium-sized Irish Pub down on the river. Since it was the Fourth of July, the kitchen was serving BBQ type food. I think that whoever writes the dish selections in LDC for weekend brunch (lasnege, chilly, otameal, turki soop, etc....) had a hand in proofing the menu we were given. Since we had already eaten, we decided against the advertised "susuges" and "pooled pork sandwiches." The Bloody Mary was decent. I thought it was a bit too thick. It came with two olives and pickle. The rim was unsalted. There was no beer chaser. Both of us added a couple tablespoons of Louisiana Hot Sauce. If you ever end up at Lizzie McNeill's, you should probably stick to beer.
